It turns out the Robert F O’Rourke, who raised zillions of dollars to run against Ted Cruz and lost and is now running for US President, has an interesting past. In addition to the DUI and burglary arrests that is. At one time he was a member of the Hactivist group called “Cult of the dead cow” and he posted various things on their BBS under the nickname “Psychedelic Warlord”, in fact in one posting he claims to have been the one to come up with the name.

These posts are still on-line so we can admire their insightfulness and the genius of their writer while he was a young man.

Let us start with the poetry, which is truly mind-blowingly bad

I need a butt-shine,
Right now
You are holy,
Oh, sacred Cow
I thirst for you,
Provide Milk.

Buff my balls,
Love the Cow,
Good fortune for those that do.
Love me, breathe my feet,
The Cow has risen.

Wax my ass,
Scrub my balls.
The Cow has risen,
Provide Milk.

Oh, Milky wonder, sing for us once more,
Live your life, everlusting joy.
Thrust your hooves up my analytic passage,
Enjoy my fruits

Provider of Cheese and other wonderful dairy products,
We will cleanse your inner intestines.
We will bathe in your Pungent Odor,
Gather cotton.

Count my eyes,
Smell my skin,
Love the Scarecrow and the Milkman.
I live only for eternity,
Thirst for the undrinkable.
Hold the heat,
Praise the dough boy at the pizza shop.
Love the Oxen dung!

Isn’t that just wonderful?

Then there’s his discourse on economics and discussion of money, which shows the kind of drug-addled genius that surely should have been awarded a Nobel Prize. I mean this is on a level with that great modern economist and politician, Occasional Cortex. I do wonder how much further he went on the private BBS under the password JELLO

To achieve a money-less society (or have a society where money is heavily de-emphasized) a lot of things would have to change, including government as we know it. This is where the anti-money group and the disciples of Anarchy meet. Anarchists profess that under Anarchy (or limited Anarchy), free trade would be established, with no governing body to interfere. Free trade to me, means that we would no longer use a system of money, but I fear we will always have a system of government, one way or another, so we would have to use other means other than totally toppling the government (I don’t think the masses would support such a radical move at this time).

We (as a people) would have to do it more or less non-violently, for if we use violence, we would never have the support of the masses of people that make up our society. Some ways of doing this, would be to slowly take the United States off the world market, and then slowly phase out our own money markets (including Wall Street). This would slowly bring the upper and middle classes of people in America together. By the time money is de-emphasized enough that it is used only for trading with foreign nations, almost all the classes of people in America would be (for all intended purposes) even.

Mind you it’s not all bad. He does identify “Ultra Trendies” quite accurately, though one suspects that this may be in part because he comes from the exact same milieu but has progressed a couple of years further down the path. On the other hand there’s the killing fantasy, which is definitely creepy.

I’m not the kind of guy to think that someone’s writings (or actions) as a teen define them but I do think it would be interesting to find out to what extent he still thinks money is bad.

I also find it interesting that Reuters and the journalist who did the investigation into CDC declined to publish their story until after last year’s election.

Mind you, while CDC was famous for being associated with the “Back Orifice” windows trojan, it seems clear to me that Psychedelic Warlord was not one of the hackers involved. See (for example) this bit of a much longer article:

Many members of New Hack are also in the cDc, have been associated with the L0pht or worked with 2600. Regular people that hang out include a few people from the DOC, some people with 2600, and other notable groups. When I was there, several cDc members were there that are also part of the New Hack crew; like Tweety Fish, Deth Veggie and Sir Dystic (who wrote the original Back Orifice tool).

(BTW Back Orifice was an amazing piece of work for its day and the inspiration for thousands of criminals to this day)

On the other had it is very clear that, along with many teenagers, Psychedelic Warlord was quite happy to stick it to the phone company and find ways to evade being billed for long distance calls. I’m not going to pass judgement on that – I know a bunch of pillars of Infosec today with similarly shifty pasts – but again it would be interesting to see how his thinking might have changed (or not changed).

The key take away is that O’Rourke has an interesting past that journalists mostly haven’t delved into and that, as and when they do, any claims that may be made that he was a 733T HAX0R are about as genuine as his current rebranding as a cowboy
